Dear Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck…

“You steal the time. You steal a date, you steal a kiss, you steal a whisper…”

Until… you don’t. And then…

“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the couple tells PEOPLE in a joint statement. “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.”

Dear Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck:

I was saddened by the recent headline of your impending divorce.

Yet another couple has dissolved into a Hollywood marriage-demise statistic.

From the bombardment of stories, reports and “source” comments, it would appear you have been working on trying to mend things for some time.

I’m sorry you could not reach a positive end in the way of unity, that is of course unity as a family staying together.

I admire that you endeavour to place the highest priority on raising your children as a co-parenting team. But that does not make me less sad…or frustrated!

So many people would laugh at me adding, “Who the hell cares!” And I get it. It’s foolish to bemoan the transitory nature of Hollywood culture.

But I thought you were different. I’ve always admired YOU two as people. I admit I have been a big fan beyond the acting.

I have been envious of how you could juggle fulfilling careers and still have a vibrant family life. Or how romantic you appeared at award shows expressing affection for each other. Keeping at the forefront that foundation of love and appreciation only aided you in your own personal accomplishments.

There always seemed to be something a bit more genuine, solid and meaningful in the way you moved about the sparkly world together. It somehow suggested you were not entrapped by it all.

So of all the flashy celebrity pairings out there, I honestly believed YOU would last. I’m so so sorry you could not, whatever the reasons.

I am sincerely sorry the fairytale is over. I’m sorry for your kids and the new future ahead of them. I’m sorry for the scrutiny that will only continue to follow you.

My faith has fallen yet another degree. Is there no one left to root for?
